Breast Augmentation Risks

Each year, hundreds of thousands of women choose to improve their appearance by having breast augmentation. While the vast majority of them have no complications, there are risks associated with breast augmentation surgery that every woman should be aware of. Dr. Rahban has an unprecedented record of safety and patient satisfaction due to his meticulous attention to all details concerning breast augmentation. Beginning with patient education, and continuing through implant choice, surgery and recovery, he works tirelessly to ensure his patients enjoy the best possible outcome. The risks associated with breast augmentation surgery can include:

  • Anesthesia Complications
  • Bleeding &/or Infection
  • Hematoma
  • Capsular Contracture
  • Need for Additional Surgeries
  • Scarring
  • Rupture of the Implant
  • Unsatisfactory Aesthetic Outcome

Any surgery carries a certain degree of risk. Choosing to have elective surgery allows patients to fully investigate the potential risks so that a fully informed decision can be made.

Anesthesia

Dr. Rahban’s preference is to use an anesthesiologist to care for the comfort and safety of his patients. This leaves him free to devote his attention to the surgery. Patients can experience nausea from anesthesia, however there are medications that can be provided for use in reducing or eliminating this. As a reminder, all patients must have a family member or caretaker drive them home and provide them with at least 24 hours of support.

Bleeding and Infection

Bleeding and infection are rare complications due to advancements in surgical procedure. Prior to surgery, patients are instructed to stop taking medication that could promote bleeding. Patients are also prescribed a course of antibiotics to begin shortly before surgery, continuing until advised. Dr. Rahban’s post operative instructions, if followed as intended, will reduce the risk of infection to the incision site, which is very important in preventing unsightly scars.

Hematoma

Despite all precautions, hematoma can develop after surgery. Hematoma is a collection of blood and fluid at the incision site, around the implant or in some other area. This pooling of fluid is usually drained to prevent infection or the onset of capsular contracture.

Capsular Contracture

The body naturally creates a capsule around any foreign body, such as a breast implant or a pacemaker. In the breast, the scar tissue can sometimes contract and squeeze the implant, causing an unusual appearance. In extreme cases, this can cause pain and swelling. There are solutions short of surgery but in most cases, the implant and the scar capsule will need to be removed. Another implant can be placed if desired. Dr. Rahban drastically reduces the incidence of capsular contracture by placing the implant partially under the chest muscle.

Additional Surgery

All breast implants will need to be replaced at some time in the future, usually between 10 and 15 years. In some cases capsular contracture or infection will require an additional surgery to correct the condition or in rare cases, to remove the implant if the patient cannot tolerate them. In these cases Dr. Rahban can discuss other methods of breast augmentation.

Scarring

It is inevitable that there will be a scar, but a well-healed scar will become virtually invisible over time. In order to achieve, this there are two important components; the skill of the surgeon closing the incision and the compliance of the patient in following wound care instructions. In very rare cases, the patient’s system naturally creates thick scar tissue no matter what precautions are taken. Since scarring is a major concern, Dr. Rahban has a policy of spending considerable time personally closing his incisions. He is a perfectionist when it comes to suturing the incisions, so that there is even pressure throughout the length of the incision, thus eliminating pressure on any given point. Many patients are unaware that many surgeons leave closure to their surgical assistant to save time. This is not the case with Dr. Rahban.

Rupture of the Implant

Implants can rupture due to accidents, mammograms or as a result of another surgical procedure, such as a needle biopsy. In this case, the implant must be removed and replaced if desired. It is obvious when a saline filled implant ruptures as the affected breast deflates.

With the development of form stable silicone gel implants, it may not be obvious that there is a leak. Women with silicone breast implants should have regular MRI or CT scans to check that the integrity of their implants has not been compromised.

Unsatisfactory Aesthetic Outcome

Implants can migrate or rotate, causing the breasts to appear asymmetric and misplaced. This is usually caused when the implants are placed above the muscle. Dr. Rahban is frequently consulted to repair this problem as well as problems related to rippling and wrinkling of the implant. Rippling can be both visible and palpable, meaning the implant can be felt. Wrinkling can sometime be seen particularly at the base of the breast.
