Surgery of the ear, also known as otoplasty, is a procedure that helps reduce protrusion of the ear away from the head. Most often, ear pinning surgery is performed on children between the ages of four to fourteen. Ears that "stick out" are often the source of teasing and ridicule in young children. This teasing can have a devastating effect on the child's psyche.
At what age can a child undergo otoplasty?
Otoplasty can be safely performed on children as young as 5 or 6 years old, as the human ear is approximately 85% to 90% fully grown by this age and the cartilage is pliable enough for reshaping.
Will otoplasty surgery affect my hearing?
No. Otoplasty strictly involves the outer structure of the ear (the pinna) and does not touch or affect the internal ear structures responsible for hearing.
Are the scars from otoplasty visible?
Scars are typically very well-hidden. The surgical incisions are usually placed in the natural crease behind the ear or within the inner folds, making them virtually unnoticeable once fully healed.
What is the typical recovery time for ear pinning surgery?
Most patients return to school or work within 1 week. Patients usually wear a protective headband or bandage over the ears for the first week, and may be advised to wear a supportive headband at night for a few weeks post-surgery.
Are the results of otoplasty permanent?
Yes. Once the ears have healed and the cartilage has set into its new position, the results of an otoplasty are long-lasting and permanent.
