Candidates for Lip Reduction
Lip reduction in Los Angeles is not uncommon. It is sought after not only for cosmetic reasons, but to remedy cases where unusually large lips interfere with daily activities such as eating or pronouncing certain words.
Dr. Rahban regularly treats patients who have congenital lip deformities such as a cleft lip, or who have lip deformities caused by an accident. He also helps those who have had unsatisfactory permanent lip augmentation.
Whether caused by genetics, a congenital condition or through accidental circumstances, the goal is to balance the volume of the upper and lower lips so that they are in proportion to the rest of the facial features. This achieves a composite that is attractive with no particular feature creating discord.

Lip Reduction Surgery
Just before surgery, Dr. Rahban will mark the area to be reduced ensuring that the result will be the exact right amount of reduction. Once agreed, the surgery will start when the local anesthesia has gone into effect. Discuss your anesthetic needs with Dr. Rahban before scheduling surgery if you feel more comfortable arranging for a deeper anesthetic.
The surgery will take about an hour. To avoid scarring, the incisions are made on the inside of the lips. Excess tissue and fat is removed and the incision is closed using dissolvable sutures. The surgery can be performed on both lips or only on the lip causing the imbalance; usually the lower lip.
The incisions made are precisely calculated to not only reduce lip volume, but to create a beautiful lip line. This may result in incisions that are called “bikini incisions” due to the technique used. The incision in the top lip is in the form of two circles joined by a center band, resembling a bikini top. The lower incision is in the shape of a V, resembling a bikini bottom. This technique provides more precise contouring and lip line creation.
Lip reduction is a safe and simple procedure and once completed, you can return home to relax. You will be given instructions on how to care for the incisions, the use of pain medication and guidelines on eating and maintaining oral hygiene.
There will be swelling which can be controlled using ice packs as instructed by Dr. Rahban. Medications may be given to assist with swelling as well as any pain. Swelling will diminish within a few days, but it may take several weeks for all the swelling to disappear. There may also be some external bruising and redness in the treatment area.
You can return to work in a week but should avoid any strenuous contact sports for several weeks. Sleep in an elevated position for the first two weeks using a few pillows under your upper back and head. Lying flat will cause swelling. Detailed instructions for the recovery period will be provided but if you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact us for assistance.
