Buccal Fat Pad Reduction
Buccal fat pad reduction is a procedure that involves removing some of the naturally-occurring fat that exists in the lower area of the cheeks to create a more contoured and structured facial appearance. It takes about one hour to complete and allows patients to achieve a chiseled transformation that is not typically possible through diet and exercise alone.
Slender cheeks. An enhanced facial contour.
In some patients, the buccal fat pads located in the lower portion of the cheeks can be particularly prominent. Often referred to as “chipmunk cheeks,” this fat can obscure the elegant bone structure underneath and create an overly rounded appearance.
Although this issue can be related to weight gain, more often than not it’s simply a matter of genetics. If your cheeks remain full despite weight loss, exercise and changing your diet, buccal fat pad reduction may be the only way to reveal the slim and contoured cheeks you desire.
Benefits
- Enhanced chin and jawline definition
- Minimized facial fullness and puffiness
- A more contoured facial appearance
- Quick, minimally-invasive procedure
- No scars, minimal pain, easy recovery
What to expect during your procedure
Buccal fat pad reduction is a straightforward procedure that can be completed in as little as one hour under general anesthesia. However, if you’re having multiple procedures performed simultaneously, for example chin implants and a neck lift, you may require general anesthesia instead.
To begin, Dr. Rahban will make a small incision inside the mouth. This incision will be completely hidden from view, so there will be no visible scars. Through that opening, he will remove the buccal fat pad. Because it is isolated from the rest of the structures in that area, the fat can be addressed fairly easily. Throughout this process, Dr. Rahban is careful to remove only what’s needed to achieve a more contoured look, so as to avoid an unintended hollow appearance. Once the procedure is complete, he will close the incisions with dissolvable sutures.
Recovery
The recovery period associated with buccal fat pad reduction is fairly easy, with very minimal pain, swelling and soreness. In general, our patients can manage their discomfort with over-the-counter pain medications. In addition, the swelling should subside within a matter of days.
You can expect to adhere to a number of dietary and activity restrictions for the first couple of days. After that, you should be able to return to work and your normal daily routine without interfering with the healing process. In terms of results, most patients see an improvement in their cheek contour almost immediately and the definition continues to progress over time.
